Based in Virginia Beach, Virginia, students range from beginners to World championship competitors. Prizewinning dancers of The Reel Thing place regularly in the Southern Region Oireachtas, North American Nationals and compete in the World Irish dancing championships.
The dancers have appeared in a live taping with the late Irish Tenor Frank Patterson for public television. Also several showcase performances have included the Chieftains and Cara Butler at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Virginia Beach, The Ferguson Center in Newport News, Richmondís Landmark Theater and the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Other honored stage showcases include The Ntelos Harbor Center, Portsmouth Va, grand opening with the Irish Tenors, Trinity Irish Dance Company, Dancing on Common Ground, fiddler Eileen Ivers, January 2009 at the Sandler Arts Center with The Magic Tree House, "The Musical", and March 2009 Chrysler Hall Norfolk, Va., with Joanie Madden, Cherish the Ladies and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
December 2009 world qualifying dancers of The Reel Thing showcased for the first time with the popular music group from Ireland Danu at the American Theatre Hampton, VA.
In 2003, the school appeared with the cast of The Virginia International Tattoo, produced by the Virginia Arts Festival. This Tattoo is the largest in the U.S.A. In April of 2010 dancers from the school will once again participate in this honored event.
The dancers have also been local favorites for the annual St. Patrickís Day morning show with WVEC Channel 13 News Reporter Joe Flanagan and for the Shamrock Sports Fest, Virginia Beach, VA.
The school is a member of the Cultural Alliance of Hampton Roads and An Cor Rud School of Irish Dance promotes Irish culture through Dance.
